Giving Tuesday 2020 Supports Scholarship Fund

In December 2019, the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow established its first needs-based scholarship fund. We are immensely grateful that because of your generosity, we were able to offer over $5,500 of financial aid to twelve writers who otherwise would not have been able to attend a writing residency. Giving Tuesday 2020 will be an effort to rebuild the fund so that we can provide support to more writers for writing residencies in 2021. Our goal is to raise $3,500 to fund scholarship opportunities for writers who cannot afford to fund a residency on their own but would love the opportunity! Please join us on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, for a celebration of giving.

Jonathan Vatner, author of Carnegie Hill, was a Dairy Hollow writer-in-residence in August. He said, “My stay at the Writers' Colony was magical. My novel revisions had been stagnating, but as soon as I sat at the writing desk and looked out at the lush Ozark landscape, my mind unclogged and I worked with incredible clarity and calm. Writing retreats can be expensive, but the affordable price, combined with the scholarship I was awarded, allowed me to attend without worrying about the cost.”

Ruth Weinstein, author of Back to the Land: Alliance Colony to the Ozarks in Four Generations, received financial assistance to complete her recent writing residency. She said, “The scholarship fund of WCDH is a wonderful, generous gift to writers whose finances, especially, and lack of time may keep them from a consistent writing practice at home. My treasured last week of September 2020 at the colony allowed me time to write about COVID-19's impact on my life and the lives of loved ones in memoir and poetry. Because of the colony’s virus protection protocols, I felt safe meeting a few other writers for outdoor dinners, dinners that nourished and delighted our palates and fed our muses with rich and varied conversation. WCDH may have helped save my writing life when I really needed it.”

Please consider donating to our scholarship fund to help writers who require financial support to complete a writing residency. Your gift will have a lasting impact on the literary arts. Beyond providing financial assistance to the writer, countless numbers of the reading public will ultimately benefit from the work produced by our scholarship recipients.
