Short written humor has proliferated the internet, with humor websites and viral pieces like Colin Nissan’s “It’s Decorative Gourd Season” and Kimberly Harrington’s “Please don’t Get Murdered at School Today” illustrating the ability of comedy to tackle everything from seasonal fun to today’s most pressing topics. In “Funnily Enough,” the class will explore at what makes a piece funny. The structure of short humor pieces will be examined. Participants will learn the difference between an idea and a premise and what makes a specific joke land. Kaye will divulge his writing process and ways of brainstorming humor pieces. This workshop will spark inspiration to write short humor pieces . No writing experience is necessary. Familiarity with The New Yorker’s“Shouts & Murmurs” page (http://newyorker.com/humor) or the satire on McSweeney’s (http://mcsweeneys.net) is a plus.
