About the event
How do we go from experience to creating the poem? We invite you to send us a poem in advance that “moves” you and to join us for this informative and generative workshop.
What “moves" the poem and makes it sing? And perhaps more importantly, how does the poem travel through its language and images to “move" us, so that we, as writers, can write poems that matter, poems that help us see in new ways?
In this workshop, we will investigate selected poems, and discuss what it is that “happens” in the poem to take us beyond ourselves toward a larger, deepened vision. There will be time to write and for those so inclined, to share.
Barbara Siegel Carlson's third collection of poems What Drifted Here was published by Cherry Grove Collections in 2023. Her previous books are Once in Every Language and Fire Road. Carlson was a recent winner in the Woody Barlow Poetry Contest and featured in eMerge in 2024.
Annie Klier Newcomer is a poetry editor for Flapper Press, an eclectic on-line publication. Originally from upstate New York she now resides in Prairie Village, Kansas with David, her husband of 44 years and their Aussiedoodle, Summit. She and her husband are dedicated to volunteerism and currently are working in conjunction with the Overland Park Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens to create an Emily Dickinson Garden for their community.
