About the event
The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) will host a virtual Poetluck on Thursday, July 16, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Although WCDH has canceled public gatherings until further notice due to COVID-19, our new monthly virtual Poetluck online provides an opportunity to hear readings via Zoom or Facebook Live. July's Poetluck features three WCDH writers-in-residence: Jocelyn Cullity, a novelist; Wendy Whelan-Stewart, an academic writer; and Erin Hoover, a poet.
Jocelyn Cullity will be reading from The Envy of Paradise, set in 1858 India just after the English took over the country. Cullity writes novels, stories, and essays. Amah & the Silk-Winged Pigeons won the 2018 American Book Fest Best Book Award for Historical Fiction. The sequel, The Envy of Paradise, was published in 2019. Jocelyn is Associate Professor in the BFA in Creative Writing at Truman State University.
Wendy Whelan will read from a recent article. Her academic research is focused on the scope of portrayals of breastfeeding in twentieth-century American women's literature. She is in the process of compiling her research into a book-length manuscript. Whalen is an Associate Professor of English at MSU in Lake Charles, LA.
Erin Hoover will read a selection of new poems. Hoover is the author of Barnburner, winner of a Florida Book Award in Poetry. She teaches at Hendrix College as the Murphy Visiting Fellow in Poetry and serves on the executive committee of the C.D. Wright Women Writers Conference.
Following our featured readers, writers joining by Zoom are invited to share their new, original work for up to ten minutes. Readings may be poems, prose, or songs. To be added to the waitlist of readers, please email director@writerscolony.org. Reading slots were on a first-come basis, limited to six with an additional reader if time allows. As of Monday, July 13th all reading slots are taken. The link for joining the Zoom meeting can be found below.
Spectators may join us via a watch party on Facebook Live at The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow page: https://www.facebook.com/writerscolonyatdairyhollow/
Poetluck is the third Thursday of every month. It starts at 6:30 with writers joining via Zoom and spectators participating in a watch party on The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow’s Facebook page. Please join us for an enjoyable evening of varied readings!
