The Artful Writer Workshop with Sandy Coomer

The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) is thrilled to present, “The Artful Writer: Exploring the Connection between Image and Word,” instructed by Sandy Coomer, poet, artist, and WCDH alumni. 

This weekend-long, 3-day, 2-night workshop is a mix of writing and hands-on art. Participants will discover new ways of experiencing their unique creativity by practicing ekphrastic writing in the genre of their choice, delving into color theory, and writing in response to colors. In addition, each student will create art in the style of acrylic pour paintings. This workshop is appropriate for all adults. Absolutely no prior experience is necessary, only an adventurous and creative spirit, curiosity, and willingness to try new things.

Ekphrastic writing combines the creative genres of art and writing. It is the process of creating a dramatic, vivid description of art. Ekphrastic activities are fun and allow the mind to reach beyond its normal creative routines and explore something different. 

The workshop will start Friday, September 11th at 4:00 p.m. and will run through Sunday, September 13th at noon with time scheduled for learning, writing, creating art, and sharing. The standard workshop fee for the class is $220 per person and includes a total of 10 hours of instruction, all meals, and art supplies. Each participant will leave with two works of art created during the workshop. The deluxe workshop fee of $350 includes all the above, plus lodging on Friday and Saturday nights at The Writers’ Colony. (Attendees may reserve additional consecutive nights at the subsidized rate of $75 per night based on availability and single occupancy by emailing coordinator@writerscolony.org.) Sandy Coomer is an award-winning poet, artist, Ironman athlete, and social entrepreneur from Nashville, TN. Her poetry has been published in numerous journals and she is the author of three poetry chapbooks and a full-length collection, Available Light (Iris Press). Over 150 pieces of Sandy’s art have been published in print and online literary arts magazines. She is a poetry mentor in the AWP Writer to Writer Mentorship Program and founding editor of the online poetry journal, Rockvale Review. She is the founder and director of Rockvale Writers’ Colony in College Grove, TN, a not-for-profit organization that exists to support, promote, and educate writers of all genres and backgrounds. Her favorite word is “believe.”
