About the event

The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) is proud to present “Military Moments and Memories,” a writing workshop for the Military Community. Memoir writing is essentially writing snapshots in time, recalling specific moments that hold rich meaning and potency, and letting those moments carry the meaning to the reader. Military life holds unique and powerful memories.  Through their stories, service members, veterans, and their loved ones can bear witness to moments of honor and heartbreak, loneliness and loss, camaraderie, and sacrifice.

“Military Moments and Memories” will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm CDT on Saturday, May 22.  The workshop is free to all active-duty, veterans, and their loved ones thanks to a generous grant from the Arkansas Arts Council Lifelong Learning program. Registration is required by visiting writerscolony.org/events or calling 479-253-7444.  This is sure to be an informative, engaging, and inspiring class appropriate for experienced writers and those who have never attended a writing workshop before. Come join us!

In this workshop, military-related prompts will be used to reach for memories and generate new writing. Specific parameters will be studied to sharpen and enrich that writing - place, relationship, and transformation.  Participants will have the opportunity, if they choose, to read from the writing generated during the workshop.

Elizabeth Heaney is a psychotherapist from Asheville, NC, and a writer who often leads veterans' writing workshops. Elizabeth spent several years working as a counselor on military bases, listening to the stories combat veterans carried home from war. Her award-winning book, The Honor Was Mine offers the soldiers’ stories, told in their own words, as well as Elizabeth’s own story of change - revealing the sacrifices of those on the front lines and the courage, grace, and honor with which they serve and struggle to truly come home.
