About the event
The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) is thrilled to present a four-day workshop retreat, “Page to Screen,” instructed by Jenna Laurenzo. Jenna was the winner of WCDH’s 2019 “Getting it Write” fellowship, awarded to a screenwriter or playwright writing a film or play that positively portrays LGBTQ life and the struggles faced by members of that community. She is the Director, Writer, Producer and Star of Lez Bomb, which made its world premiere at the 2018 Bentonville Film Festival where it won the Best Narrative Feature jury award. The movie’s theatrical release was in November 2018, and it is now available on Netflix.
The four-day workshop will start Tuesday, August 2 and will run through Friday, August 5. Class will meet from 10:00 a.m. till noon each day allowing for time scheduled for writing. The standard workshop fee for the class is $350 per person. The deluxe workshop fee is $545. This includes the workshop, plus lodging in a writers’ suite on Tuesday through Thursday nights at The Writers’ Colony and all meals. Attendees may reserve additional consecutive nights at the subsidized rate of $75 per night based on availability and single occupancy.
“Page to Screen” is open to all levels. Participants should come prepared with ideas for a scripts/short stories/etc. they'd like to explore turning into a screenplay and bringing to life on the screen. This is sure to be a fun and informative weekend. The workshop is limited to 10 attendees, so register early.
Jenna says, “One of the biggest challenges I find when talking to writers, is they don't know how to get their work made or seen. They run up against this wall from the start, and then feel deflated or discouraged when people tell them how hard the industry is. My hope is to inspire writers and content creators to take control of their screenwriting career and find empowerment in creating their own work instead of waiting for others to do so.” In this class participants will analyze their most feasible idea and create an executable plan to develop and promote it. Options such as a web series, short film, etc. will be explored, and the necessary next steps to bring it to fruition will be studied. This workshop will cover how to create that first piece of content, and then use it to open doors and get agents, producers, and casting directors to read your next script. “Page to Screen” will cover how initial content can be leveraged to tackle a second piece of content that is larger in scope, such as feature-length film.
Jenna Laurenzo graduated with honors from Carnegie Mellon University, where she earned her BHA in Drama and English with a focus on writing & directing. Lez Bomb was the follow-up to her short film, Girl Night Stand, directed, written, and starring Laurenzo. It was an internet hit that garnered over three million streams and drove online cultural conversation for months. Jenna was selected for SHOOT online's 2018 New Directors Showcase and the Film Society of Lincoln Center's 2018 Artist Academy. Jenna can also be seen in Peter Farrelly's Academy Award-winning Green Book. She is currently working on her next feature film.
