The Prize

A one-month, all-expense paid fellowship at the Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow, Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is awarded annually to a culinary writer of demonstrated ability whose work pertains to traditional American home or regional cooking, and embodies the Tyson mandate of "Feeding the world like family."

The Fellowship

This fellowship is underwritten by Tyson Foods, Inc, Springdale, Arkansas. More than 60 years ago, John Tyson heard chickens were bringing a better price in northern markets, so he cashed in his savings and borrowed the rest of the money needed to finance a trip to Chicago. In a battered truck, he delivered 500 Arkansas chickens, selling them for a profit of $235, $220 of which he wired home to pay for his debts and order another load of birds. From this start grew a multi-billion dollar international company providing both home and institutional consumers with a wide variety of food products.
