Waterfall, writers at outdoor workshop

The Moondancer Fellowship

Underwritten by Martin & Elise Roenigk

The Prize

A one-month residency, all-expense paid fellowship at the Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow, Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is awarded annually to a nature and/or outdoor writer of demonstrated ability. Acceptable projects include books and magazine articles. Transportation to and from the Colony is not included.

The Fellowship

This fellowship is underwritten by Martin & Elise Roenigk, whose intention is to foster the appreciation, understanding, preservation, and enjoyment of our natural world. Moondancer is a tribute to the often unseen elements of nature, those that typically come out at night or live in the darkness of caves, which enhance awareness of our relationship to all living things. The Fellowship comes with an opportunity to explore 1,225 private acres of wild creek, pristine woodlands, stone bluffs, and mountains bordered by 1.1 million acres of public forests and the Buffalo River Wilderness Area.

Sherfield Cave, of which 80% is on the property, is the second longest cave in Arkansas and the largest hibernaculum in the state for the Indiana Bat. Also available is the Roenigk's lodge at the mountaintop watershed, also in Newton County, which includes mountaintop meadows and the very unusual "Hole In The Rock" waterfall formation.
